As well as referring to a woman of a religious order, "nun" is the Egyptian word for the primal ocean. It is also the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and means "fish." The term "nun" as we use it today may have its roots in nonne, or nurse, but may also relate to the Hebrew "nun" as an emanation of the Ocean Mother: i.e. Joshua, son of Nun in the old Testament, and Jesu, son of Mary in the new (Mary being related to Mari, Stella Maris, Marina, etc.)
