J S Kingfisher “King” to his friends is a composer, recording artist, and record producer residing in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles. His first album, floating upstream, was released in 1993, followed by Vesica Piscis in 1998. Vesica Piscis his first nationwide release garnered much praise, and airplay on over two hundred stations worldwide. Several tracks from the album especially Cave and At Night I Fly to Heaven (sometimes France) are still in regular rotation on satellite radio.
In 2002 Kingfisher founded Philomuse, his own production company, and produced and released John Steiner’s Out of the Blue. King’s next solo release, Lost in Paradise, will be released on the Philomuse label in the summer of 2005. Also underway from Kingfisher is a musical theater piece called The Third Rail, and a follow-up to Out of the Blue with John.
King’s first professional gig was as a pianist and musical director for the notorious Lee Garland Show, a raucous and bawdy review featuring Garland’s female impersonations, comedy, and dancers. By his early twenties he was playing in rock bands and working with synthesizers, and in the early eighties moved to LA. Once there, he spent two years at the Dick Grove School of Music, where he studied piano, composition, and arranging; this led to a half-dozen years of active session work as a keyboardist, arranger and engineer, often from his own recording studio, Electric Cat. King worked throughout the nineties on several multimedia projects, composing for the theatrical productions Both Hands, Kelly’s Dream in the Rain, and finally Unity Gain, a popular and well received production based on his first album, which included several musicians and movement artists floating behind a sixty-foot wide projection surface.
J S Kingfisher’s music is heavily influenced by his other esoteric interests, which include dreamwork, mythology, eco-feminism, queer spirituality, and the Gurdjieff work. He lives with his longtime partner, filmmaker Hugh Lawson, and their dog Baba. In addition to his musical pursuits, King is also a published poet, and is currently designing a Tarot deck.
